Vega has said in candid moments: “[Of course the thing is a musical joke. ‘One of the most preposterous recordings to ever make money was Suzanne Vega’s Luka, a feel-good romp about a kid getting beaten, abused and tortured. Vega is so transparent in this song that it *surely* (it IS) a musical joke.’ – That’s a How-Happy-I-Was that my song ‘Tom’s Diner’ was making money. I wondered if anyone listens to lyrics, and in a song I wrote whilst I was counting my Tom’s Diner royalties for the week, I wrote an upbeat two chord groove. I was adding nonsense words to this song of pure joy, and I decided – let me find out if people really listen. So when you listen to Luka, the girl is called crazy, is getting beaten up abuse – everything is there short of forcible sexual abuse. Know what? To this day, when that song come up in my set, people are dancing.

Tis is consistent with the aphorism “[anyone *Else’s* pain is easy enough to bear].” (VIKING® Book Of Aphorisms, one of the best books ever published, truly) So the bit about the pain – no one cares. My career went nowhere after this song. And you know what? I found the whole idea true! More people took delight in my failure to maintain my career than delight in my two songs. I became my own joke].”
